The once upon a time popular 'Tholu Bommalata' (leather puppetry) of Andhra Pradesh is the
origin of the leather lampshades. Leather Puppetry has been one of the earliest performing arts
in India dating back to the 3rd century B.C. It has gained peak popularity during the Vijayanagar
Empire. These puppets are folk in style, the stories are drawn from Ramayana and Maha
Bharata, Krishna leela, and other stories. As the Leather Puppetry lost its popularity over the
time, the artisans invented other forms of household decorative items such wall paintings,
lampshades, hanging lamps, etc using the same art forms and technology. The Lampshades are
made of goat leather and painted using vegetable dyes. Leather is perforated to give rich
appearance against the background of light and to dissipate heat generated by the light. While
leather puppetry is combination of visual representation and storytelling, lampshades represent
rich visual representation.
The leather lampshade can be used as perfect gift item for several occasions, especially during
house warming. The Lampshade is also very good home decor item, which gives grand
appearance to the living room.
Wipe clean with soft and dry cotton.
